What is Pilates?

Pilates is a form of exercise that strengthens the whole body, focusing on the muscles that support your spine (often called core muscles). This allows us to have strong, supple bodies which can move freely without injury in daily life. Pilates is needed more now than ever where people are increasingly sedentary for long periods of time, be it working at a desk or through general lifestyle habits.

Why Pilates?

Pilates is suitable for all ages and abilities including complete beginners.

There are innumerable benefits to attending a regular Pilates class including:

  • Alleviate back pain, sciatica and musculoskeletal issues
  • Better posture, flexibility and balance
  • Stronger core and pelvic floor
  • Increase muscle strength and tone
  • Relieve stress and aid mental relaxation
  • Reduce tension and prevent injury

Why Connect Pilates?

My classes are right for you if:

  • You want a teacher who watches you move and offers corrections
  • You want a class that differs every week
  • You want a class where different movement levels are offered to suit how your body feels on the day
  • You want the option to receive a class video to do at home if you miss a class

My classes aren’t for you if:

  • You want a gym style fitness class focused on cardio and sweating a lot
  • You want the teacher to stand at the front of the class the whole time
  • You want the class to have the same movements each week

I’ve been doing Steph’s Pilates classes for several years, initially in person but more recently online. It makes little difference - she still manages to make you feel that you’re in the same room. Her classes never feel routine. Instead, they’re fun, efficient, educational and manageably stretching, lifting you out of the regular humdrum of life. At the end of the hour your body feels better, you’re in a better mood, you’ve learned something new, and you’ve achieved something worthwhile. Steph has a positive, engaging and cheerful manner. She always finds ways to be encouraging to the class in general, pushing those who can a little further while never making anyone feel under pressure. With her eagle eye, she’s also great at spotting things that any one of us is doing well or could do better (as well as a nice way of saying so). She generates a fantastic atmosphere in the class. It’s an hour very well spent. It's a course that never flags. Very highly recommended.

I have been attending Steph's classes since the start of the pandemic, and my body is now a firm addict. We run an events business which entails quite a bit of lifting and carrying so I need to stay supple and strong. The beauty of Steph's classes is that she tailors the class to your ability with 3 different options to most moves coupled with a detailed description of which muscles you need to engage as well as when to breathe into each move. As a result, I have an intense workout within the bounds of what my body is capable of doing at that class. As I have progressed my body has become more flexible and strong without injury. I also regard the class as a form of meditation, as you have to focus entirely on what your mind and body is telling you. Love Monday evenings!

I love my weekly Pilates classes with Steph; she is an excellent instructor, who ensures all abilities get the most out of each lesson. Steph is experienced and knowledgeable and checks we perform exercises to help our balance, posture, strength and flexibility safely. Steph is also the loveliest person ever! 🙂
